Accessibility

Flipnem is built to be usable by everyone, including people who study with a screen reader, keyboard-only navigation, or other assistive technology.

Study sessions announce each step as it happens:

When a card appears, the remaining count and the question are read aloud.
When you reveal the answer, the answer is read aloud. On type-in-the-answer cards, you also hear whether your typed answer was correct.
Confirmations like Card suspended or Card buried are announced, and so is the end of a session.

Images inside cards are announced using their alt text, so decks built with descriptive alt text work best with a screen reader.

Flipnem targets the built-in screen readers on each platform: VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, TalkBack on Android, and NVDA or JAWS on Windows.

Studying with the keyboard

The entire study flow works without a mouse:

Space or Enter reveals the answer, and rates the card Good after reveal.
Single-key ratings (default A / S / G / E for Again / Hard / Good / Easy) — press the help key (? by default) during a session for the full cheat sheet.
Every shortcut can be rebound from the shortcut help dialog (Customize shortcuts).
Dialogs trap focus while open and close with Escape.

Anywhere in the app, a Skip to content link appears when you press Tab on a fresh page, jumping past the header. Keyboard focus is marked with a visible outline; mouse and touch use are unaffected.

Visual comfort

Dark mode — follow your system preference or set it manually in Settings.
Font size — card text scales per deck from the study screen's typography controls, roughly half to double the default size.
Reduced motion — when your OS asks for reduced motion, Flipnem disables its card and dialog animations.
Card colors — each deck's card background color is configurable if a particular contrast works better for you.

Studying by voice with AI

Flipnem's Claude integration offers a fully conversational way to study: connect Flipnem as a tool in Claude, and it will present each due card, wait for your spoken or typed answer, and record your rating — no visual interface required.

Troubleshooting

If a study shortcut seems dead — a key does nothing, or worse, reloads the page — check for browser extensions that add vim-style keyboard navigation (Vimium, Vimari, and similar). They intercept plain letters and Escape before Flipnem sees them; r, for example, usually means "reload page" to them. Exclude Flipnem in the extension's settings, or rebind the affected action from the study screen's shortcut editor (press the help key, then Customize shortcuts). The Decks button at the top of the study screen always works as an exit regardless of keyboard shortcuts.

In our own VoiceOver testing on macOS Safari, two rebindings were needed to get a fully working session: Return to card on 5 or U (letters like r were intercepted; 5 is now the default), and Exit on 6 (Escape was captured before reaching Flipnem). If a session is hard to leave or re-read with the defaults, start with those two.
